I spent a few years learning how to paint. Painting is its own language, if you want to use it, then you better learn its grammar, its vocabulary, and it doesn’t hurt to know a few things about its history as well as its contemporary application. The deeper I got into painting, the more I got interested in images in general. Painting became a way to analyse how images are created, used, how they influence our sense of self, our memories, our desires. Images shape the way we view the world, our individual conceptions of reality. Images can easily blur distinctions between what we feel is real and what is fictional. Painting as a medium reflects on the underlying mechanisms of perception, as it is always a step away from a realistic representation of the world. Realism and illusionism in painting can be ruptured with a single brushstroke, and the process of making a painting requires so many decisions that the reality it depicts can only be a very short lived one.

I am becoming more and more interested in narratives. The starting point of my works is often in literature, films, or in art history, and I am developing a strong interest in visual narratives and how they differ from narratives in language. I am interested in how fiction can invade reality, how the structures in storytelling that we experience in images, literature, films, or even video games, can influence our perception of reality and our perception of ourselves. I want to analyse images as a whole through the medium of painting, but not see painting as something special and isolated because of its long history: Only when paintings are viewed in the context of other pictorial media, they can be discussed in a contemporary discourse. I believe that research into images and image-making can reveal elementary political and societal structures we are not

In the context of an exhibition, I’m interested in paintings as objects. Of course a painting can be absolutely fine hanging on a big white wall. But it can also be used in other ways, in can be built into a structure, it can be an object in the space, it can be one part of the larger whole of the exhibition. I have started incorporating different elements into my exhibition, such as large-format prints, texts, objects and architectural elements. They all work in a similar way the paintings do: they invent a new space, they relate to each other, they are fragments of a larger narrative.

わたしは絵画の習得に数年を費やした。絵画は言語であり、もし使いこなしたければ文法や語彙を学んだ方がよい。絵画に引き込まれるほどに、一般的なイメ－ジというものに興味を抱いた。そしてどのようにイメージが作られそして使われ、自身の感覚や思い出・欲望に影響するかを分析する方法になった。

イメージは、わたしたちの世界観や現実に対する個人の概念をかたちつくる。イメージは、実話と作り話の境界をかんたんにぼかしてしまう。メディウムとしての絵画は知覚の下地に影響するが、世界の現実的な提示からは遠ざかってしまう。現実主義と幻想主義は、ひと塗りの筆が破裂するごとく描かれ、その過程では多くの決定がなされる。現実はほんの一瞬描かれるにすぎない。

最近わたしは物語性により興味を感じるようになった。制作の開始には文学・映画・芸術の歴史などがある。視覚的な物語の創作に強い興味があり、それが言語の物語とどのように違うのか。作り話は実話をどのように侵略するのか。イメージ・文学・映画・ビデオゲームの中で経験するお話は、わたしたちの現実の知覚にどのような影響を与えるのか。わたしはイメージというものを絵画のメディウムとして分析したい。絵画を何か特別な孤立したものとしてではなく。絵画が他のメディアとの前後関係の中で鑑賞される時のみ、現代的な論説として討論される。イメージとイメージつくりというものの研究は、人間が普段はあまり気にしない基本的な政治と社会の構造を明らかにすると信じている。わたしたちがイメージを知覚する方法を確かめることは、最終的には現実を定義して何が実話で何が作り話しかという問いに行き着くのだろう。

展覧会ということで言えば立体への絵画に興味がある。もちろん絵画は大きな白い壁に掲げられるものではあるが、他の方法も可能である。構造物の中に描かれたり、スペースの中の立体だったり、大きな展覧会のほんの一部だったりする。わたしは異なる要素が統合された方法―巨大な印刷物・テキスト・立体や建築的なものなどーで展覧会を始めている。それらはすべて絵画と似た方法で効果をあげ、新たなスペースを作り出し互いの関係性を築いている。すべてはより大きな物語の断片なのである。

オーストリア政府科学調査省の助成金を得て来日して４，５月AIRY滞在中

AIRY artist in residence Titania Seidl (lives and works in Vienna, Austria) presents a body of work created in Kofu during her residence in April and May 2014. The exhibition will consist of oil paintings, small objects, modiﬁed furniture as well as an artist publication containing images and a short story. In the art works created during the past two months, Titania Seidl combines fragments of classical Western imagery with motifs from Japanese art history, such as design patterns, paintings on folding screens and the shapes of Japanese ceramics. The artist thereby creates components of a narrative dealing with the exchange of tradition, the shortcomings of language and the desire to communicate across space and time.

チタニア・サイドル（オーストリア・ウィーン｜４－５月レジデント）二ヶ月間の滞在成果発表を行います。展示作品は油彩画・小さなオブジェ・日本家屋一部に彩色、加えて作家により印刷製本された挿絵入り短編小説などです。全ての作品はこの二ヶ月間に制作されました。
チタニア・サイドルは、西洋の古典的イメージ要素と日本美術の歴史たとえばデザイン模様・屏風絵や陶器の型などを結合させて作品をつくります。作家は伝統の交換・言語の不足・時と場所をつなぐ欲望により物語を紡ぎ、そして絵画世界をつくりあげていきます。
