Light and shadow are the two most important components of my work. I contrast light with shadow to construct my paintings- then line and shape emerge. Light and shadow can have just as strong a presence as that of a tangible object; they can transform a space and create a whole new atmosphere. Unusual plays of light can transform a familiar and banal space or object into something that is strange and unknown. Thus light and shadow have the power to change spaces and objects so that they represent entirely different ideas from those that we would expect. The spaces and objects that I paint can all be found within a domestic environment. They are all banal, everyday and familiar. However it is exactly this expected banality that has the potential to make them unsettling when it is realised that they might not be so familiar after all. Within my work there is the ‘hole’ or ‘abyss’ motif. There are empty spaces that might be filled with other objects which are just as ordinary as the sink or washing machine which contains them, yet they lie empty. In each painting there is also a notable absence of a human presence, or a remnant suggesting there once was a human present in these spaces that were created for and by us. Instead of being a part of day-to-day life, as one would expect, these objects and spaces are all unfamiliarly empty and silent.
光と影はわたしの制作で2つの最も重要な要素です。絵画を構築するために光を影と対比し、その後ラインと形が出現します。光と影は明確な物体ほど強い存在感を持つことができます。
それらは場所を変形して、全く新しい雰囲気を作り出すことができます。光の異常な作用は、よく知られた平凡な場所や物体を奇妙で未知のものに転換することができます。光と影は、わたしたちが期待するものとは完全に異なった場所と物体に変えてしまう力を持っているのです。
わたしが描く場所や物体はすべて身近に見つけることができます。それらはすべて、平凡で日常生活の中にあるものですが、しかしながらそれらの真実を本当はわかってはいないかもしれません。
私の仕事内では、「穴」あるいは「深淵」のモチーフがあり、流しや洗濯機とには穴があります。そしてそれらは空虚です。
そこに描かれるのは人間の存在の顕著な欠如、あるいは抜け殻です。人間の存在がこれらのスペースに以前あったことを示唆しています。
日常生活の一部であり、これらの場所と物体はすべて空虚で静かです。
