LUCKY DAY

I am interested in investigating and further defining the aesthetic of Comic Abstraction. This ideology functions on using references from cartoons, comics, film and other source points found with in popular culture as the point of departure for creating work. Through abstracting and merging points of reference one can form new critiques and express new ideals/concerns.

When considering the genre in relation to my practice I am particularly interested in merging contemporary imagery with that of compositional elements and subject matter found with in traditional painting in order to question ideals of expression, authorship, value and taste. I would like to create a new series of works, which use elements from the local environment as the impetus for production.

My working methodology relies on using specifically coordinated objects, images and materials to communicate a raw and intentionally unrefined emotion. Through relaying and abstracting aspects of our modern environment such as ornaments and found images, I intend to bring into question systems of value, expression and authorship with in the commodity driven culture we inhabit. Through coupling low and high cultural references with expressive marks or materials I create a balance of forms that are aware of their sociological placement with in culture and art history. In this noncommittal visual age when ephemerality and Internet culture prevail, I create a physical satire that challenges the common preconceptions of the limitation of paintings and sculpture whilst documenting a time and a feeling. Expression and reinvention struggle to articulate themselves fully, while cultural ties, colour and texture exist as tools to create a family of objects, questions and relationships.

わたしは抽象喜劇の概念を研究してさらに美的に定義することに興味がある。この思考形態は、時事風刺マンガ・コマ続きマンガ・映画などの情報源が大衆文化から創造的な作品へと移行する先端を発見することで機能する。抽象化・同化させることを通して新たな評論と経験、そして新しい理想と考え方をかたちつくることができる。

この実践に関するジャンルを考えるとき特に興味があるのは、伝統的絵画に見られる構成要素と表現の理想・原作者・価値・味わいなどの課題を同化させることにある。わたしは日本の地方環境から刺激を受けて新作のシリーズをつくりあげたいと考えている。

わたしの制作方法論として、物・イメージ・素材を生でかつ故意には洗練されていない感情と組み合わせる方法に頼っている。装飾品やつくられたイメージなど現代社会の局面を組み替えたり抽象化する。そうすることで、我々が居住するありきたりの文化のなかに価値・経験・原作者に関する疑問を投げかけたい。

作品に意味ありげな印や物質を取り上げて文化的高低を対にすることで、文化や歴史における社会的地位に気づくためのバランス装置をつくりあげる。インターネット普及によるあいまいな時代文化、わたしは時間と感覚を記録することで絵画や彫刻への一般的先入観や限界に対して物理的な風刺をつくりあげていく。それらをじゅうぶんに伝えようともがくことが表現であり再発明であろう。色と素材は物質・疑問・関係性という一族をつくりあげる道具として存在するのだ。
