The body of my work reflects the polar experiences of having been raised in a rural New England town whose best years had long passed and later living in Japan.  My early years were marked by the struggle and futility of simple survival.  Life was loud, sweaty, even chaotic, but it was always filled with an undercurrent of striving for a better future.  My years in Japan allowed me to absorb a radically different cultural expression.  It was one of quiet beauty, harmony with surroundings and an unchanging thread that connected past and present.

These two distinct experiences inform my drawing and painting as I search for content, form, negative space, relationships, line and narrative in an exercise to see the past I’ve come to understand and a future that is unknowable, but unbounded with possibilities.

I create art to feel the exhilaration of the moments when the process allows me step outside of myself. Conflict motivates my art.  This conflict is manifested in the juxtapositions of texture, form, line and color. Throughout the painting process, content and form gradually become clear to me.  In time, a deep, personal and emotional narrative of my childhood, and later, my life in Japan begin to emerge on the canvas. Although I am interested in many aspects of Japan, I am finding a personal connection to the appearance of animals in Taoist, Buddhist and Shinto art and culture; I am especially intrigued by the art of Mori Sosen. I try to understand why animals appear in my own work, and I can only guess that they connect me with Japan in a most intimate way while also revealing the deep human emotion we all experience in a palatable way.

わたしの作品は、ニューイングランドの農村で過ぎ去りし幸せの後、日本に渡ったことに影響を受けている。初めのころは単に生存競争のきびしさや虚しさが現れていたように思う。生きることは騒々しく汗まみれで混沌としているが、それは常により良い未来のために努力することの源でもある。わたしは日本で過ごした時期に、アメリカと根本的に異なる文化的な経験をした。それらは静寂美、周囲との調和や過去と現在を結ぶ不変の脈絡などを意味する。

これらの二つの経験は、わたしのドローイングとペインティングに影響があった。わたしが探求するのは内容、形、負のスペース、関係、線や過去に学ぶ物語である。可能性は無制限で、見知らぬ未来を理解するようになった。

わたしは自分自身が外へ一歩を踏み出す瞬間に爽快さを感じられるようなアートを制作したい。競合することはわたしのアートの動機になる。それは手触り、形、線、色の並置で明らかになり、ペインティングのプロセスを経てそれは次第に現れる。時間、深さ、個人的で感情的な子供時代の物語、その後の日本での生活はキャンバス上に出現する。

またわたしは日本について多くの側面に対して興味があり、道教・仏教・神道における動物表現とアート・文化とのそれぞれの関係性について調べている。特に「森 狙仙」の表現に興味をそそられる。

動物たちがなぜわたしの作品に現れるのかを考えるとき、最も親密な方法で日本とわたしを結びつけているからとしか言いようがない。
