As an artist, I prefer to work in solitude, in a quiet place. The studio space is my escape. Having spent the majority of my life in New York City, I have learned to take a meditative approach to everyday life in order to maintain balance in such an environment. Although I feel I have mastered this and appreciate the hectic environment, I still dream of a landscape where the silence feels palpable. Where I can take part in a different kind of community, with new views, values, traditions, nature and people.As of recent, I am most interested in what I describe as “diffusing elements in nature”. Such as fog, smoke… or the feeling of being submerged in a body of water.

How we experience these transient states.

How they affect our senses.

How they might modify how we perceive volumes.

How we interact with this impermanence.

These moments of diffusion could be overlooked- as they are an expression of a fleeting moment, maybe even a shift between elemental states. But it is that precious articulation of impermanence that entices me. These “diffusers” alter landscape as well as mindscape.

I prefer to take an architectural approach to this subject of my own… to create objects, sketches, paintings, photographs in pursuit of an imaginary structure, of quietude… as an exercise for myself, as a guide to stillness and contemplation.

わたしは芸術家として、静かな場所で一人で制作することを好む。スタジオスペースは私の脱出場所だ。ニューヨーク市で人生の大半を過ごしたわたしはこの環境の中で平衡を維持するために、日常生活に瞑想的な接近方法を取り入れることを学んだ。これを習得したあとは多忙な環境に感謝し、さらに沈黙を触知する風景を夢見るようになった。どこへ行けば新しい風景や価値、伝統、自然と人々、地域社会のさまざまな相違に出会うことができるか。

最近では「自然の要素を拡散させる」ものについて最も興味を持っているーたとえば霧、煙、または水域に沈んでいるような感覚など。

どのように我々はこれらの過渡的な状態を経験するか

それはどのように私たちの感覚に影響を与えるか

我々が量感をどのように認識しているか、どのように修正するか

どのように我々はこの無常と対話するか

つかの間の瞬間の表情や、元の状態での転換の瞬間を見落とす可能性がある。しかしそれは自分を誘い込むために無常だが貴重な装置で、これらのいわゆる「散布機」は実風景だけでなく心象風景をも変える。

わたしは静寂に助けられ、自分のための鍛錬として静寂かつ架空の構造を追求した立体・素描・絵画・写真を作成する。このように建築的なアプローチの手法を取ることを好む。
