My practice is concerned with deconstructing my own response to a specific place or landscape by reducing this motif to its essential aesthetic and experiential components. This process begins with a gestural approach to mark making within my drawings, which aim to capture the immediacy and urgency of these primary visual and auditory experiences. More specifically these experiences find representation through a spontaneous ‘synaestheisiastic’ approach to drawing, which is then used as a springboard for my approach to larger works on canvas. This formal process ensures the finished work is far enough removed to allow an otherwise unknowable essence to emerge, resulting in a painting that brings together a myriad of experiences into one, semi-abstract space.
In 2008 I was awarded The Summerfield Trust Scholarship, the award allowed me to study at The British School at Rome over a five-week period. In 2010 I was awarded the Artist in Residence at ‘The Muse 269’ on Portobello Road, London, lasting seven months, and resulting in my first solo show. This residency helped me to work and develop independently; providing a transition period away from academic life into a professional, Practicing Artist. After my residency at the Muse Gallery I was awarded with an Artist in residency at Can Serrat International Art Centre’, Barcelona, Spain.
In The spring of 2011, In search of new influences I decided to go traveling. My three year journey took me around Australia, South East Asia, New Zealand and Japan. I believe this experience became extremely beneficial to my artistic and personal growth. To go from the shear expanse and harshness of the Australian desert to the sublime peaks of New Zealand’s mountains was awe inspiring, and it proved to be a profound experience for me. I think traveling to Japan was my greatest influence. I had always been interested in Japanese Art, especially Zen Buddhism, their ideal in Harmony, balance and subtlety had always played a pivotal role in my own practice. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of Hokkaido, and to see the transition of the seasons was a very special time for me. I believe I found a second home in Japan, a home I hope to return to.

わたしの絵画実践は、対象を本質的根拠と実験的要素の状態へと持っていくことにより、ある特定の場所や風景に対する自身の反応を批評することにある。この過程は素描をしながら見せかけのアプローチをすることから始まる。そして最初の視覚聴覚による経験からただちに捕らえることを目指している。さらに言うなら、これらの経験は予期せぬある種の幸福へのアプローチを通して発見することがあり、それは大きなキャンバス描画への飛板となりえる。この過程は完成作品が現実からかなりかけ離れていることを意味し、不可知の要素が出現している。結果的にわたしの絵画は無数の経験をひとつにまとめて半抽象的な作品になる。
２００８年にわたしは「サマーフィールド信託奨学金」を獲得して「ローマ英国学校」で５週間学ぶ機会をえた。２０１０年にはロンドン・ポートベロ通りの「TheMuse２６９」に７ヶ月滞在制作する賞をえて、最終的にそこで初個展を開催した。レジデンスをすることで、単に学問的な生活から実践的で職業的な生活へと移動期を体験できたし、アーティストとして独立することができたと思う。そこでの滞在後は、スペイン・バルセロナの「カン・セラート国際アートセンター」での滞在制作の賞をえることができた。
２０１１年春にはさらに新しい環境を求めて旅に出ることにした。３年以上に及ぶ旅は、オーストラリア・東南アジア・ニュージーランドそして日本へと続いた。この経験はわたしをアーティストとして人間として大きく成長させるものと信じている。オーストラリアの荒々しい広野やニュージーランド山々お崇高な頂上はわたしを鼓舞して止まず、深長な経験をさせてくれた。日本への旅も偉大な影響を与えてくれるだろう。特に禅や仏教そして調和の精神はこれまでずっと興味があり、平衡や微妙といった精神はいつもわたしの絵画実践の中で極めて重要な要素となってきた。北海道で自然美に圧倒され季節の移ろいを体験することは特別な時間だった。日本は第二のふるさとであり、またいつか戻ってきたい場所である。

Artist Statement:
am drawn to the landscape because of the atmosphere it can create. These moments of fleeting beauty are unattainable. I am pursuing this.
It is impossible to describe the perfect scene or the perfect beauty, this wonderment of nature and beauty are the same thing.
Be it a beautiful scent or the feeling of the calm stillness twilight brings, nature and beauty don’t last, but by trying to paint the these ambiguous experiences I am capturing them. The passing of time is something you cannot control, time changes your emotion and it can manipulate your perception of beauty. Your memory doesn’t recognize time, because it is your own.These memories are precious, I want to reflect this fleeting beauty and cement them onto the canvas.
I fear time will eventually take my memory and the potency of the experience will fade. I paint the fragments of transient beauty that are in danger of being carried away by the harshness of time.

自然が織りなす情景が、わたしを風景画の創作へと掻き立てます。時のうつろいとともにその 姿を変えていく自然のなかを、捉え難いはかない美のひとときが、過ぎ去っていく。 わたし はその過ぎ去りゆくものを追いかけます。
完璧な風景を説明することができないように、完璧な美を説明することはできない。これは自 然と美に共通する不思議です。素晴らしい芳香や、静かな黄昏の情景が差し出されても、そこ にある自然と美は、留まることなく通り過ぎていく。時を止めることはできず、時間は感情を 変化させ、美への印象を処理してしまいます。
記憶に刻まれた情景は、こうして流れていく時に逆らい、わたしが心の裡に繋ぎ止めたもので す。わたしはそのかりそめの、わたしの記憶に生きる美の幻を、画布に反映し繋ぎ止めたいの です。
いつか記憶が色褪せ、美がわたしのもとを去ることをわたしは恐れます。 現実の無慈悲にさらわれそうな美の欠片を、わたしは描いています。
