I am interested in places where objects have been arranged by human-beings: a bedroom, a garden, a beach, a bar. These spaces contain in their arrangement layers of personal, social and collective histories. They construct a view of the world and a way of understanding it. They are in this sense political, although not overtly. They are lived in, used, part of a daily or weekly routine of work, leisure and recreation. Often objects are arranged in such a way that they have both a utility value and also a symbolic or sentimental value. These spaces are analogous to the process of painting. Generic and banal imagery is arranged idiosyncratically and in relation to certain historical positions and genres.
More and more within these spaces of social and personal meaning we find interruptions. Meaning is disrupted; something intrudes. Advertisements or an architectural façade forms the backdrop to garden or beach, music is streamed and shuffled on the internet, a sign historicizes a particular area in shorthand. The sense of place becomes confused. Objects and areas of history and culture coexist with shams, imitations or other disinterested histories. These differences are hard to discern when complete areas are coopted and engineered.
I work with such ambiguities and difficulties of perception in my paintings, seeking to recreate and juxtapose such encounters with the clear and admirable with these shams or surrogates. In them various distinct images, viewpoints and handlings of paint are colluded and screened together.

わたしは人間によって配置された物体のある場所に興味がある。寝室・庭・海岸やバーなどーこれらの場所は個人や社会、収集された歴史の重なりといったものを内包している。それらは世界の見方や理解の仕方を構築する。そして、あからさまにではないが政治的な意味合いもある。それらはそこで暮らし、使われ、日々または週日の決まった仕事の一部であり、余暇やリクレーションの一部であった。物体は一方で日常的な利用価値、また一方では象徴的で感傷的といった両方の意味合いで配置されることが多い。これらの場所は絵画の過程では類似している。一般的で平凡なイメージは奇異に、特定の歴史的位置やジャンルに関連して配置されている。
社会的、個人的な意味で、この空間内でより多くの遮断を見つけることができる。意味合いが破壊されて、何かが侵入する。広告や建築ファサードは庭園の背景やビーチを形成し、ネット上では音楽が絶え間なく混ざりながら流れ、記号は省略形で特定の領域を歴史化する。そして場所の持つ意味合いは混乱する。歴史文化を負った物体と地域は偽の共存をして、模造品や他の利害履歴を生む。すべての領域が操作される場合、これらの違いを識別するのは難しい。
わたしは自身の絵画の中で、このような曖昧さや困難を知覚する作業をしている。偽物や代理品を明確かつ立派に、言わばそのような出会いを並置しようと探求している。その中に様々な明確な画像、視点、絵の具の扱い方などが、共謀と一緒に映し出されるのです。
